A simple charm. Three herbs for the earth, three scents for the air, and three objects of her victim’s. Lilia was careful to keep away from the windows and doors. Not only was she attempting this the third time for this particular man, but this was the sort of thing that reeked of archaicism. Any hint of influence beyond the purely political and military was bound to be suspect, and met with harsh consequences. The Despise had only ended two years ago, and any hint of Dréatik was watched carefully. She could still see the broken neck, the moldy corpse hanging until flesh was falling off of the last “correction,” the woman strung up in the square of Taramenu the day she left that city.

The stares already followed her in the streets of Lower Falls: what woman would walk about at night like that? What sort of woman?

A woman who could protect herself.

Lilia passed her fingers through the three candle flames, one at a time. She lit a splint and passed it into the tiny pot in the center. The dried leaves of thistle, nightshade, and mushroom smoldered, burning fast and then slow. She lifted the pot, passing it over the dagger, the ring, and the cloak pin, wafting the smoke out with her other hand. As she did so, she sang in a high voice, but quietly:

Terror night,

Fairer the light.

Heal mind not,

Peel and rot.
